The Red Hen Songbirds

We've already brought you information on The Red Hen, a consignment boutique that started in Carrboro and recently moved to University Mall.  With their new spot at the mall, they have more space.  And, lucky for us, The Red Hen is taking advantage of that space to offer fun events, like Red Hen Songbirds that happens every Monday at 10 am.

This is a music session for babies to tots under 5 years of age.  There is music, puppets, scarf dancing, and storytelling.  Only a half an hour, the woman who leads this little session was very sweet and unassuming.  She is so gentle and patient with the kids.  Honestly, my toddler wasn't interested in anything else going on around him outside of the train table (it's getting to be a problem - I shared recently with my Facebook and Twitter friends that I can't even go in to Barnes & Noble anymore since we have such a hard time leaving that Thomas table).  So he was a tough sell when it came to music.  However, the other children in the area were pretty into it and seemed to really be taken!

A Songbirds session does cost you money.  It is $60 for a 6-class punchcard or $12 for a drop-in (siblings are discounted rates).  I know, I know, the Chapel Hill Public Library has a free storytime in the same area about the same time.  However, the Library storytime has been packed since we last wrote about it here, so this is a great option, too!  Plus, given its focus on music, The Red Hen Songbirds is a different experience for kids.  There is more room for movement and dance as well as exposure to rhythms (kind of reminded me of Kindermusik, actually!).  You can try out your first class for free, so why not give it a go?!
